Frequently Asked Questions
Answers to the questions parents ask most about YouTube safety, parental controls, and YouTube Kids.
Is YouTube safe for kids?
YouTube's standard platform is not designed for children under 13. Its recommendation algorithm can lead children from age-appropriate content toward increasingly edgy or adult material in a single session. YouTube Kids, Restricted Mode, or Supervised Accounts for teens 13+ are the safer alternatives — each with different levels of parental control.
What is the difference between YouTube and YouTube Kids?
YouTube Kids is a separate app designed for children under 13, with a curated library of age-appropriate content, no comments, no search by default, and parental approval for each channel. Standard YouTube has no content restrictions by default, an unrestricted comment section, and a recommendation algorithm not designed with child safety in mind.
How do I set up parental controls on YouTube?
For children under 13: use the YouTube Kids app and set up a parent-approved profile. For teens 13+: link their Google account to yours via Family Link and enable Supervised Accounts, which lets you approve or block content and see their watch history. Restricted Mode is a partial filter that can be PIN-locked on a device but does not catch everything.
What age is YouTube appropriate for?
YouTube Kids with parental content controls enabled is appropriate for ages 4 and up with a parent nearby. Standard YouTube with Supervised Accounts is reasonable from ages 13+, with regular check-ins on watch history. Unrestricted YouTube access without monitoring or content filters is not recommended for anyone under 16 given the unpredictability of the recommendation algorithm.
Can I see what my child watches on YouTube?
Yes. For children using YouTube Kids, the parent app shows all viewed content. For teens using a supervised Google account, Family Link lets you view their watch history and set daily screen time limits. For any account, watch history is also visible within the YouTube app under Account → History — though teens can delete it.
